Decades of failed trickle-down economics and competition from large corporations have driven a race-to-the-bottom in wages that is destroying the middle class and decimating the small business customer base. Consumer demand from a thriving middle class is essential to small business success. The economy is built from the bottom up, not the top down.
At a small business, employees are like family. Living wages and family-friendly workplace policies are an investment in your most valuable asset. Living wages and paid leave policies improve employee retention, morale, and productivity. Providing paid sick days is good for public health, reducing spread of disease in the workplace. No one should work full-time and live in poverty. No one should have to choose between taking care of a sick child and losing their paycheck or their job.
Small businesses thrive when our communities thrive, when our customers have money in their pockets to go out to a restaurant, get their car fixed, or go to a local retailer to find that perfect gift for a loved one. That’s why the Main Street Alliance is fighting to raise the minimum wage, establish common-sense paid sick days standards, and make public investments in family medical leave insurance.
At the end of the day, one business’s employee is another business’s customer. Every job should be an economy-boosting job.
